The Aging Process

Aging is a natural process in which cells begin to renew themselves more slowly. For your skin, this means less collagen and hyaluronic acid to support and fill out the layers. Your skin becomes thinner and looser, while the long-term effects of frowning and squinting take their toll. Environmental influences, pollution, sun exposure, stress and smoking can all increase these effects. Over time, this combination of factors contributes to the three Ds of aging.

The 3 Ds of aging:

deterioration - fine lines, wrinkles, texture change
descent - droopiness or sagging skin
deflation - loss of fullness or volume

Side Effects & Risks

BOTOX COMETIC®

In some cases, the toxin can migrate and cause a temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases, there can be a drooping of an eyelid or asymmetry of facial expression. The risk of any side effect (including temporary bruising) depends on the individual patient and the injection technique. Dr. Patterson will discuss this with you before your treatment. The most common side effects of Botox Cosmetic® are temporary and reversible, lasting only a few weeks.

JUVÉDERM®

Potential side effects associated with JUVÉDERM® products include redness and swelling at the injection site which may be assocated with tching and pain on pressure to the area. These reactions may occur immediately or may be delayed, and may last for up to a weeek. If these reactions persist for more than one week or if you have any other side effects which concern you, seek medical medical attention as soon as possible. Other possible side effects include hematomas, firmness or bumps at the injection site, staining or discoloration at the injection site, and a weak filling effect. As with any injection of a medical device, there is an associated risk of infection. Cases of tissue damage in the forehead region, abscesses, nodules and immediate or delayed hypersensitivity after injections have been reported. You should not use a JUVÉDERM® product if you scar frequently, are hypersensitive to hyaluronic acid, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. JUVÉDERM® products are not approved for use in children. Tell your doctor if you have an ongoing skin infection in the area to be treated, if you have recently had other skin surface treatments, have previously user fillers, or if you are currently taking any medications. Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, porphyria, or heart disease, or if you are hypersensitive to lidocaine or other local anaesthetics, JUVÉDERM® products containing lidocaine may not be appropriate for you. For any unexpected effects following injection of a JUVÉDERM® product, contact your doctor.

Recovery

Normal activities can be resumed the day following treatment. Minor swelling, tenderness and bruising may remain with some patients for a few days.

Botox Cosmetic® FAQs

Q. What is Botox Cosmetic®?

A. Botox Cosmetic® is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Although derived from a bacteria, it is able to be used for the treatments described because it is applied in extremely small amounts and applied properly, does not spread through the body.

Q. How is it used?

A. A tiny amount of Botox Cosmetic® is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic wrinkle. This blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area and, as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

Q. Where can Botox Cosmetic® be injected?

A. The most common areas for the use of Botox Cosmetic® are the frown lines between the eyebrows and on the forehead. On occasion, some other areas may be treated as well; however in Canada, Botox Cosmetic® is only cleared for use for frown lines between the eyebrows.

Q. Does Botox Cosmetic® freeze my face?

A. No. Botox Cosmetic® only relaxes the overactive muscle underneath the dynamic wrinkle. The other elements of facial expression remain active.

Q. How long do the effects last?

A. The effects of Botox Cosmetic® usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox Cosmetic® may begin to last longer.

Q. Are Botox Cosmetic® treatments safe?

A. Botox Cosmetic® has been used safely and successfully in opthamology for over 10 years and for wrinkle therapy for over 6 years. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.

Q. Is the treatment for everyone?

A. There are very few restrictions regarding Botox Cosmetic® treatments. Patients who are pregnant, nursing or have a neurologic disease should not be treated. Patients should discuss with their physician if Botox Cosmetic® treatments are appropriate for them.

Q. What is the treatment like?

A. A tiny amount of Botox Cosmetic® is injected, very precisely, into the muscle being treated. Because the needle is so fine, and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with the injection is minimal. Most patients compare the sensation to a bug bite. No sedation or local anesthetic is required and you can often drive yourself home or back to the office. Some patients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site. This can be covered with make up.

Q. How can I find out if I am a candidate for Botox Cosmetic®?

A. If you would like to learn more about your cosmetic options, or find out if Botox Cosmetic® treatments might work well for you, you are warmly invited to schedule your Consultation.

JUVÉDERM FAQs

Q. What is JUVÉDERM®?

A. JUVÉDERM® is a facial filler made from hyaluronic acid (HA) – a naturally occurring sugar found in your skin. It combines with water in your skin to instantly restore lost volume, smooth out lines and wrinkles and enhance lips. The smooth gel provides instant results that are long lasting and natural looking.

Q. What areas can I treat with JUVÉDERM®?

A. JUVÉDERM® smoothes unwanted lines, restores natural contours and lost fullness in your cheeks, and enhances your lips to give you a youthful, natural and refreshed-looking appearance.

JUVÉDERM® is used for facial rejuvenation and enhancement. It can:

  • Soften smile lines
  • Accentuate and restore lost fullness in your cheeks
  • Enhance the size and shape of your lips
  • Restore the contour of your jaw line

The most appropriate lines to treat with JUVÉDERM® are those that are described as static – the lines you can see when your face is still. JUVÉDERM® can also be used to enhance your lips or accentuate cheeks for soft, subtle results that leave you looking your best.

Q. What makes JUVÉDERM® different from other facial fillers?

A. JUVÉDERM® employs a patented technology to create a smooth consistency gel that gives you a smooth natural look and feel unlike other hyaluronic acid facial fillers (that have a granular consistency). In addition, JUVÉDERM® XC (extra comfort) is a hyaluronic acid wrinkle filler containing lidocaine, a pain reliever that allows you to be more comfortable during and after treatment.

JUVÉDERM® is also the first hyaluronic acid facial filler that has demonstrated effectiveness in persons of colour. Another main advantage of JUVÉDERM® versus semi-permanent fillers is that it is reversible. With JUVÉDERM® you can return to your pre-filler appearance if you don't like the results.

Q. What is hyaluronic acid?

A. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a complex sugar naturally found in many tissues of the body such as skin and cartilage. It binds to water to create more volume and elasticity in the skin to correct the appearance of wrinkles and facial folds.

Q. Do I need an allergy test?

A. No allergy test is required with JUVÉDERM®.

Q. What's the difference between JUVÉDERM® and collagen injections?

Q. What will a treatment with JUVÉDERM® accomplish?

A. JUVÉDERM® smoothes away unwanted lines, restores natural contours and enhances lips to give you a smooth, natural and refreshed appearance. Most patients need only one JUVÉDERM® treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing or volume enhancement with results that last up to one year. Actual treatment results may vary from one person to another.

Q. How long does the treatment usually take?

A. The injection process is quick and easy and takes only about 15-60 minutes, depending on the areas treated. You'll also need to allow time to consult with your cosmetic doctor prior to treatment

Q. Is a treatment with JUVÉDERM® painful?

A. JUVÉDERM® is injected directly into the skin using a fine needle to reduce injection discomfort. Because JUVÉDERM® is also available with pain-reducing lidocaine, the whole injection process is a more comfortable experience.

Q. How is JUVÉDERM® facial filler used in treatment?

A. Your cosmetic doctor will inject JUVÉDERM® under your skin using a fine needle. The smooth gel flows easily into the skin, providing a soft, natural look and feel. You will see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas.

Q. How long before I see results?

A. Results are instant. You will see an immediate improvement in the treatment area. Most people need only one treatment to achieve an optimal outcome. Supplemental "touch-up" treatments may be required to achieve and maintain the desired look.

Q. How long does JUVÉDERM® last?

A. The unique formulation of JUVÉDERM® is clinically proven to last up to one year3 with one treatment.

Q. What is the recovery time following a treatment?

A. Treatment requires minimal downtime and most people return to their normal routine immediately.
